Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
