Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
