Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
